CoDesign Collaborative LIVE: Civic Design & Innovation in Healthcare

Watch the recording of an inspiring conversation about civic design in healthcare from CoDesign Collaborative LIVE.

Description

On Wednesday, November 15, we welcomed three impressive design professionals working to improve and innovate the design of our healthcare services and benefits for a virtual CoDesign Collaborative LIVE conversation. Moderated by Jennifer Rittner, Associate Director and Assistant Professor in the School of Design Strategies at Parsons, panelists were Ashleigh Axios, CXO and Co-owner of Coforma; Shannan Elaine Clarke, CEO and Founder of Queen & Baby; and Sarah Konstantino, Product Director in UnitedHealth Group’s Strategy, Growth and Innovation organization. They discussed the impact and possibilities when human-centered design processes are centered in policy and healthcare solutions and offerings. The conversation touched on Black maternal health, expanded access to health benefits for the LGBTQ+ community, and the COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force.

If you missed this conversation, we encourage you to watch the recording and explore the generous list of resources and readings referenced in the conversation:

Ashleigh Axios shared:
Thank you to Coforma for your support:

The Design of Identity Politics and Tribalism

This virtual roundtable discussion with TRIIIBE has been postponed.
Triptych with TRIIIBE and golden apples

Stay tuned for a new time and date for our virtual roundtable discussion with TRIIIBE, four artists who explore tribalism and identity in unexpected ways. Alicia, Kelly and Sara Casilio are identical triplets who live inextricable lives. They have lived together, worked together and have made artwork together for much of their lives. In 2006, they founded TRIIIBE, an ongoing creative collaboration with photographer Cary Wolinsky.

Some have described the growing polarization in culture and politics as a “retreat to tribalism.” Critics warn that destructive tribalism is hardwired within the human brain and that tribes are “badges of identity, not of thought, and they play “zero-sum politics.” In TRIIBE’s own words, “The country has become increasingly divided, and we wanted to understand why. The answer we kept returning to was tribalism based on the assumptions that we cultivated about each other. Cary’s traveling the world had given him a vast perspective on how people identify themselves and each other. Alicia, Sara, and Kelly’s experience of being triplets had made them intimately aware of what it means to be an “us” and a “them.”

Conversation: What Does It Mean To Be a Creative Abolitionist?

Join us in Portland and online on January 26 for a conversation with Angela Medlin and Abibat Durosimi in celebration of The We Design Issue.
Spreads of The We Design Issue

Abolition is a verb—a practice. It consists of the actions we take to build safety and to tear down harmful institutions. Amid nationwide uprisings against systems of oppression, individual, institutional, and societal, a new set of demands has been thrust into public consciousness, and designers and artists have answered the call. But this is not new. Artists, designers, and leaders have created new models for centuries—models of safety, creativity, and love—and places to dream beyond these constructs. As Derecka Purnell writes, “abolition is an invitation to find new answers to the problem of harm and to build new ways to prevent harm in the first place.”

CoDesign Collaborative is excited to bring back our popular Design Museum Mornings series with What Does It Mean To Be a Creative Abolitionist on January 26, 2023 in Portland and audio live streamed online. In partnership with PNCA Graphic Design, this living room-style conversation will feature longtime creative abolitionists Angela Medlin and Abibat Durosimi and will be moderated by Jocelyn Rice.

This event coincides with the forthcoming publication of The We Design Issue, which celebrates women, gender-expansive, and BIPOC designers. There will be music, coffee, tea, and treats; please join us!

Special thanks to OnPoint Community Credit Union for their partnership and support and to PNCA Graphic Design for hosting the program.

Join us on December 15, 2022 from 12:00-1:30 pm in Portland and online.
Paper clippings

In the latest issue of Design Museum Magazine, Design in Government, Guest Editor Dana Chisnell set out to empower readers “to make your own corner of the world a better place.” People do not often talk about government through the lens of design. Instead, they might say governments institute policies and procedures, develop infrastructure, and create services. But, they do design, and all of us are not only a part of that process, but we are deeply affected by it, too.

Join us on Thursday, December 15, 2022, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm PT / 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm ET for Design and Government: The Built Environment and Beyond at Portland State University and online. In this hybrid discussion, Senator Akasha Lawrence Spence, Megan Horst, Associate Professor, Portland State University, and Wendy Willis, Director, Oregon’s Kitchen Table, will explore the possibilities of design and government, from the built environment and beyond, and empower attendees to take an active role in bettering the world. The conversation will be moderated by writer and educator Bruce Poinsette

Free program, but attendees must register in advance.

Reimagining the Future: How Will the Workplace Evolve & How Do We Adapt?

3:25-3:40pmET

Description

How do we redesign office space to embrace the power of hybrid workplaces while meeting the needs of the future workforce? This question is top of mind for every leader today. Many recognize that if we subscribe to one solution for a remote, hybrid, dynamic, or anchored work model, we overlook the need for multifaceted solutions, ones uniquely tailored to employee workstyle preferences and how to design for them. The need to explore, vet, and iterate ideas to arrive at strategies and solutions that account for these evolving preferences in the COVID era is making this a unique moment in rightsizing and reimagining what returning to offices will look like.

Research indicates that many employees do not want to go back to old ways of working, they want a hybrid-remote office model moving forward. At the same time, data also consistently shows what employees miss most are social interactions, team collaboration, and connection to culture in ways that only physical office space can distinctly provide. This virtual session will dive into how organizations create a roadmap for the way forward: addressing data-driven approaches to understanding employees’ needs and preferences, to space planning, rethinking square footage and amenity spaces, to thought provoking ideas that deliver an ideal employee experience – one that is safe, healthy, and resilient and can withstand the shock of any future disruptive event.

Strategies to Restore Confidence in the Office Environment

11:30am-12:00pmET • 0.5 IDCEC CEU/HSW

Description

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading developers and corporate occupiers were starting to increase their focus on how the office influences the health and productivity of the occupants inside them. The pandemic has accelerated what may have been a 10-year healthy building movement into 2. In this session we will share new research that explores people’s concerns with returning to the office, the challenges with working at home, and the strategies that will restore confidence in the office environment. We will tease out the solutions that address short-term problems related to disease transmission from those that have staying power once the pandemic is over, and demonstrate the impact that buildings have on other aspects of health, such as cognitive function, sleep, and mental health.

Creating Spaces for Neurodiversity

12:10-12:25pmET

Description

We are living in a time of increased numbers and awareness about individuals with neuro-sensitives and special needs, such as ADHD. In fact, 1 in 8 people are considered neurodiverse but fewer than 50% know it. But these individuals can be high energy, out of the box thinkers, excel in a crisis, and be bold problem solvers. Not only is designing to be inclusive the right thing to do, there is a compelling business case for it as well. Investigate the various aspects of neurodiversity and explore how to create spaces that are more physically and culturally inclusive for people with a wide spectrum of neurological conditions to allow them to thrive.

If You Build It, Will They Come? Considering the Whole Human In Workplace Design

12:25-12:40pmET

Description

When considering the workplace in a post-COVID future, there is a tendency to focus on the material aspects of the floorplate: furniture and space design, surface, and textile cleanability. But once we’ve agreed on how many can inhabit a space together after completing the prerequisite screening form and temperature check, what of the person? This topic explores how work might facilitate our human needs in order to support what truly matters for our personal and collective well-being – everywhere you work.

Can You Hear Me Now?

12:40-12:55pmET

Description

At least two generations of employees have been vocal about wanting more flexibility in redefining their work environment. Whether we have been listening or not, employees have been telling us more and more about who they really are. While COVID may have been the catalyst for most organizations to shift how (and where) they work, it has also served as an amplifier for the voice of the employee. In this session, we will unpack some of the themes that have been elevated during COVID and the elevation of social justice issues, and what this means as companies work to recruit and retain top talent. In this session, we will explore the significance of leveraging your employees’ insights as design principles.

A Post-Pandemic Design Proposition

12:55-1:25pmET • 0.5 IDCEC CEU

Description

In 2019, under the direction of Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Hackett, Ford unveiled a new masterplan for its world headquarters campus redevelopment. On March 16, 2020, Ford’s 34,000 US office employees went home. Inevitable questions focused on the future of work immediately followed, specifically, the future of the campus masterplan and our workplace – “where do we go from here?”

Led by Global Design Director Jennifer Kolstad, ASID, Associate AIA, Ford assembled a coalition that deconstructed the “big wicked problem,” harvesting opportunities and course-correcting historic pain points. Research-led design substantiates outcomes by leveraging expertise and evidence at the outset of the design process. Kolstad will demonstrate the importance of diverse perspectives and share some of the ideas that emerged from Ford’s Future of Work Think Tank. “If we believe that design is an evolving hypothesis then constructing the framework and expertise with which to design can be as powerful as the outcome itself.”
